Step by Step

How Herline Works

From the moment you start a journey to the moment you arrive safely — here's exactly what happens.

1

Create your account

Sign up with your name, email, and password. Add your emergency contact's name and phone number — this is the person Herline will alert if you don't respond. You accept our Terms & Conditions which explain how and when alerts are sent.

Takes 2 minutes
2

Start your journey

Before you set off, open Herline and start a journey. Enter where you're going, your current location, and your expected arrival time. Then choose how often you want to be checked in on — every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or every hour.

15 sec to set up
3

Herline automatically checks in on you

At each scheduled interval, Herline automatically sends you a check-in notification — no action needed on your part to trigger it. When it arrives, you'll see a simple set of buttons to tap: I'm Okay, I Have Arrived, Phone About to Die / Lose Signal, Emergency SOS, or Call Emergency Contact. Just tap the one that applies. No typing, no calls — one tap and you're confirmed safe.

Automatic & one tap to confirm
4

If you don't respond — grace period starts

If a check-in passes without a response, Herline doesn't immediately alert anyone. Instead, a 10-minute grace period begins. You'll receive a clear notification: "10 minute grace period has started." This covers signal drops, a briefly unavailable phone, or any short delay.

10 minutes of buffer
5

Emergency contact is alerted (if needed)

If the grace period ends with no response, your emergency contact automatically receives an SMS from Herline: "This is Herline. After the given grace period, there has been no response from [your name]. Please check in with them urgently." You also receive a notification with an emergency speed dial button.

Automatic & instant
6

You arrive safely

When you reach your destination, press I Have Arrived. You may be prompted to confirm with biometric authentication (Face ID or fingerprint) — this is optional and can be turned off in your settings. Once confirmed, Herline ends your journey and you'll have the option to send a quick reassurance message to your emergency contact letting them know you arrived safely.

Help & Support

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how Herline works.

Does Herline call the police or emergency services?

No. Herline is not an emergency service and does not contact the police, ambulance, or fire services on your behalf. It alerts your nominated emergency contact via SMS. In any life-threatening situation, always call 999 immediately.

What happens if I don't respond to a check-in?

A 10-minute grace period begins. If you still don't respond, your emergency contact automatically receives an SMS from Herline asking them to check on you urgently.

Can my emergency contact see my location?

Location sharing is a Herline Pro feature. If enabled, your location may be shared as a one-time snapshot with your emergency contact if you miss a grace period, your phone dies or loses signal. You can disable this at any time. Herline does not store your location history or share it with anyone else.

Is Herline free?

Yes — Herline is free to download and the core features are completely free to use. No payment is needed to set up check-ins, nominate an emergency contact, or use the SOS button. Herline Pro (£2.99/month) unlocks additional features for those who want more.

What is Herline Pro?

Herline Pro is our premium subscription at £2.99/month or £24.99/year. It includes up to 3 emergency contacts, Apple Watch support (SOS + I'm Okay from your wrist), and location sharing — a one-time snapshot shared with your emergency contact if you miss a grace period, your phone dies or loses signal.

Does it work on Apple Watch?

Yes — Apple Watch support is available with Herline Pro. You can press I'm Okay or trigger an SOS directly from your wrist without needing to reach for your phone. Perfect for runs or exercise where your phone is nearby but not in hand.

What if I lose signal or my phone dies?

You can let Herline know before it happens by pressing the "Phone About to Die / Lose Signal" button. This pauses alerts so your emergency contact isn't falsely alarmed. With Herline Pro, your last known location is also sent to your emergency contact automatically.

Can I change my emergency contact?

Yes — you can update your emergency contact at any time in your app settings. Make sure your contact knows they have been nominated and understands what an alert from Herline means.

Do I need to confirm my arrival with Face ID?

When you press I Have Arrived, you may be prompted to confirm with biometric authentication (Face ID or fingerprint). This is optional and can be turned off in your settings. Once confirmed, you'll also have the option to send a reassurance message to your emergency contact letting them know you arrived safely.

Who is Herline for?

Herline is for anyone who travels alone and wants peace of mind. It was built with women in mind but is available to anyone aged 18 and over. It is particularly useful for late-night commuters, solo travellers, university students, and early morning runners.

Our Story

Built because safety
shouldn't be an afterthought

Herline was created for anyone who has ever wished someone knew where they were.

Why Herline exists

Too many people travel alone without a safety net. Whether it's a late-night journey home, a solo trip, or simply walking back from a friend's house — there are moments when you just want someone to know you're okay.

We wanted something simpler — a quiet companion that checks in on you and only escalates when it needs to.

"Your safety should be covered by default — not something you have to remember to set up."

Herline is built around one core belief: if you don't respond, someone should know. The app handles that automatically, without drama, and without requiring anything more than a tap on a button.

Who it's for

Herline is for anyone who travels alone and values peace of mind. But we built it with some people particularly in mind.
